Starting a career in law is both exciting and challenging. At Machins, trainees are exposed to a wide range of practice areas and experiences which help shape them not just as solicitors, but as professionals.

Since joining Machins in April 2021, I have worked as a paralegal in residential conveyancing and commercial property before commencing my training contract in July 2025. I am nearing the end of my first seat in the Public Family department. I am currently in the Mental Health Committee, having previously been a part of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Before joining Machins, I worked in retail – an experience which laid the foundation for many of the professional skills I rely on today.

Here are some of the key lessons I have learned so far which I hope will be useful for trainees and future applicants reading this:

1. Your Background Adds Value

Not every legal career begins in the same way – and that’s a good thing. My route into the legal practice was shaped by my earlier experience in retail, where I learned how to communicate effectively, stay calm under pressure and work confidently with people from all walks of life. Whatever your experience, it brings something valuable to your role

3. Make the Most of Seat Rotations to Find Your Ideal Practice Area

One of the strengths of training at Machins is exposure to different areas of law through seat rotations. Working across residential conveyancing, commercial property and public family has already given me insight into how varied legal work can be. View each search as a chance to learn and to discover what interests you most.

3. Clear and Honest Communications is Key!

When you are new to an area of law, you won’t always have the answer straight away – and that’s ok. What matters most is being honest, taking notes, checking with your supervisor and following up clearly with client. Good communication isn’t about knowing everything – it’s about being honest about what you don’t know!

4. Questions Move You Forward

No-one expects trainees to know everything from day one – this was especially difficult for me to accept! Asking questions shows you are engaged and keen to learn. Your supervisor is there to guide you along your rotation. Curiosity strengthens your development.

5. Be Part of the Firm Beyond Your Desk

Machins encourages all their staff to get involved beyond the every-day work. Being part of committees and attending events such as careers fairs provide you with opportunities outside your day-to-day work which can broaden your experience.

6. Protect Your Wellbeing

Working in the legal profession can be demanding, which is why prioritising your wellbeing is essential. At Machins, initiatives like our Mental Health Committee and mentorship programme provide support and guidance. Mentors offer practical advice and reassurance, helping you manage challenges and maintain balance whilst learning from those who have already navigated the same path.

7. Be Open to Change

Moving between departments and gaining exposure to different areas of law may feel daunting, but it is one of the best ways to push you out of your comfort zone. Being open to new experiences builds confidence, resilience and adaptability – all of which are essential characteristics to becoming a successful solicitor.

8. Value Feedback – of All Kinds!

Feedback isn’t just about being praised – its about learning and improving. Positive feedback reinforces your strengths whilst constructive guidance helps you improve. Every piece of feedback supports your progress.

9. Organisation is a Key Skill

Everyone works differently – some prefer lists, others use digital tools or diaries. What matters is having a system that works for you to help you keep on track whilst maintaining high standards in your work.

10. Trust Your Own Journey

Everyone’s career develops in different ways and at different speeds. Focus on making the most of each opportunity as it comes. I can’t believe my time in the Public Family department is coming to an end, time has flown by but in the space of six months, I have learnt a lot about myself which I will carry with me into my next rotation.

Training at Machins offers more than technical experience – it provides an environment to develop professionally and personally. Make the most of the opportunities available and approach each seat as a chance to learn something new.
